González, Enrique

As a child, Gonzalez begins to cultivate his interest in art on his own, while taking various art courses. During his adolescence, one of his painting instructors introduces Gonzalez to graphic arts, which becomes the chosen medium for his own work over a long period of time, in which he even abandons painting.
These years are years of searching and profound experimentation, where his work is influenced by several artistic tendencies: abstraction, expressionism, cubism, figurative art, minimalism, Arte Povera, social realism, geometric art and Pop art. He finds it vital to explore all fields of art.
He reads compulsively, without any established order, all books that fall into his hands. In art, he reads Stravinsky, Tapies, Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Tristan Tzara, Rainer Maria Rilke and Tanizaki. In philosophy, he reads Valmiki, Tagore, Krishnamurti, Nietzsche, Taisen Deshimaru, Lao-tzu, Ibn Arabi and Jalal ad-Din Rumi. In poetry, he reads all of Spain’s 1927 generation, Rainer Maria Rilke (who becomes one of his biggest influences), Walt Whitman, Goethe, Schiller, Hölderlin and Rimbaud.
The same instructor who introduces Gonzalez to the world of printmaking also acquaints him with a deeper knowledge and understanding of all kinds of music, not in terms of interpreting, but rather perceiving: classical, jazz, rock, singer-songwriters. From that moment on, music greatly influences his life, which is reflected in his work.
After this period of training and searching that lasts several decades, Gonzalez begins to find a solid path, defined within the framework of figurative art. He narrows his interest on the human figure, landscape, small animals, birds and objects that pass unnoticed in everyday life. He takes up painting and drawing again, which are the media he uses to this day. The essence of his work can be summarized as a constant reflection on the simple, and, at the same time, complicated reality of living.
